To reminisce is a beautiful thing. For adults, it is the beautiful sights of the late 20th century. The elderly population remember times even before that - they have grown up to see the world’s newest generation take over our planet and create a new era. And so we have recently entered “the new 20s”.
The 1920s was a beautiful time; the world met technology. Cars, radios, phones, cameras - everything we see to be universally common household items were just being invented. One of the most significant things, however, to come out of the roaring 20s was when women gained the right to vote. The population created the most significantly modern present. But, of course, the new era faced its own hardships as well as its successes.
The “Wall Street Crash” brought arguably the world’s strongest nation to its knees. An immense increase in organised crime and racism hit the streets. It really was a terrible time for anyone who wasn’t a straight white man. To an extent, these problems still exist. They have been greatly minimised - though similar corruption still exists and thrives all over the world.
We as a species have survived another decade, and transitioned into the new 20s, where we are fighting for an equal world. Brand new brilliant things are happening every day. New vaccines and medicines are being discovered, brand new technology is being invented that could never have been dreamed of 100 years ago. Our species is, again, evolving, however, ironically, we are pushing ourselves towards the verge of extinction - an uninhabitable planet.
The 1920’s was a time where the world was discovering itself. Now, in 2020 we are ever closer to that discovery. We have discovered a lot, but there is still an unimaginable amount left to learn. We must do so carefully. Our planet is coming closer and closer to an irreversible death. We must be careful, and do whatever it takes to reverse this.
Nice piece. There really are strong parallels between 1920s and 2020s.
